Here is a top 8 of the worst injuries sustained by athletes from least graphic to most graphic. You have been warned.

Hominick lost his UFC fight to Jose Aldo, managing to damage his hematoma in the process. The Canadian took extreme punishment early in the fight but fought on to decisively win the final round of the fight and nearly take the title from Aldo. He sustained a bulge above his right eye which grew after taking a punch from Aldo on the ground.

You all remember the famous Mike Tyson ear bite. After roughing up Tyson in the boxing ring, Tyson held onto Holyfield and bit a chunk of his ear off. Holyfield would have the last laugh though as Tyson was disqualified leading to a Holyfield win.

This would be higher up the list but it is still one of the worst injuries the Premier League has ever seen. The Manchester derby can be fiery but nothing compares to what happened on April 8 1996. Busst resembles the injury to a 'shark bite'. He broke his leg, which punctured his skin, shedding blood onto the pitch. United keeper Peter Schmeichel had to be sick after seeing the injury.

Most people won't remember this one but it is still up there with the gruesome ones. Vaughan clashes with Bolton's Abdoulaye Méïté and severed an artery in his foot. Vaughan, then 18 is now 30 playing football at Portsmouth on loan from Wigan Athletic.

The challenge from Birmingham City's Martin Taylor caught Eduardo's left leg as his foot was planted on the ground, resulting in a broken fibula and open dislocation of the ankle. The injury was so graphic that Sky Sports were against showing replays of the tackle that led to the injury.

UFC fighter Silva suffered a horrendous leg break when attempting a leg kick against his opponent Chris Weidman. Silva also sustained a broken tibia and fibula. Silva was considered as one of the best UFC fighters and has only recently returned to UFC.

The French gymnast suffered one of the worst leg breaks witnessed in a global event. He snapped his leg on the vault landing with the sharp crack heard throughout the stadium. You can see from the picture just how gruesome and painful this injury was.

If you have got this far, then this is the winner. Everyone will remember the horror double fracture that Shaw suffered against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League about three years ago. You can see in the picture that Shaw is screaming in pain and it is so unsettling to see the way his leg sways when the tackle goes in.
